Northampton Town secured a hard-fought point away at York City, ending the hosts' pursuit of a club-record 14th consecutive home league win. The 1-1 draw at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday saw the Cobblers take an early lead before conceding a late equaliser.

Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh gave Northampton the perfect start, firing home a first-time strike from 15 yards in the 10th minute. The goal came from a Lee Evans corner that was cleared to the edge of the box. York pressed for an equaliser but found goalkeeper Zach Jeacock in resilient form on his first league start in over a month. Jeacock made a key save to tip a curling effort over the bar in the 63rd minute and was part of a back three that limited clear chances.

The home side's pressure eventually told in the 84th minute. A cross from Jeff King was met by Ollie Pearce, who headed past Jeacock to level the score. Pearce had seen two earlier efforts ruled out for offside, with Jeacock's defensive line key in those decisions. The point leaves Northampton 23rd in the League Two table with seven points from eight games.

Manager Scott Lindsey will take heart from a more assured defensive display, though the winless run now stretches to 27 games in all competitions. "First league appearance in more than a month and probably not a coincidence that Cobblers looked a more assured defensive unit with him in it," was the assessment of the performance. Northampton's next challenge is a trip to face 11th-placed Grimsby Town on 17 October.
