Northampton Town are now debt-free after the sale of land next to their Sixfields Stadium cleared a £20m liability. The 19-acre warehouse development behind the East Stand was sold to a company called Neneside, which is linked to the GRS Group, with the transaction writing off the club's entire debt.

Kelvin Thomas, whose decade-long chairmanship ended last month, confirmed the outcome. "The football club benefited from it by writing off all the debt," Thomas said. He described the land as 'probably the most debated piece of land ever in the country' and stated the new Brazilian investors from Sports Alpha Capital were not interested in the site, allowing a separate deal to proceed.

Takeover brings new leadership

The debt resolution follows the completion of a takeover by consortium Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) last month. The move ended Thomas's tenure and brought in new co-chairmen Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain. Former AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato is among the investors in the group. Thomas and fellow director David Bower facilitated the land sale after finding the original deal too complex for the incoming owners.

End of a long saga

The land had been at the centre of a prolonged saga involving the partially constructed stadium area. Planning permission for its development was granted earlier this year, and the adjacent East Stand was itself built by the GRS Group, with Sixfields Stadium finally being completed in 2025. The latest transaction finally delivers the debt-free status and completed stadium that had long been a vision for the club.

The financial reset comes as the Cobblers seek stability on the pitch, currently sitting 23rd in League Two with 7 points from 8 games, having managed just one win and four draws so far this season. They are 12 points behind the league leaders, Salford City. The club will hope their new off-field security can translate into improved results, having recorded a win, a draw and three losses in their last five outings. Their most recent result was a 2-0 defeat at Grimsby on Saturday 17 October, with goals from M. Warhurst and Jon Guthrie. This followed a 1-1 draw at York on Saturday 10 October, where Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh scored for Northampton. Their next opportunity to improve their form comes quickly, with a home fixture against 13th-placed Tranmere on Tuesday 20 October. The team has scored just 4 goals this season while conceding 7.
