Northampton Town have finalised an agreement with a consortium led by former Chelsea striker Alexandre Pato. The club, currently 22nd in League Two with six points from seven games, confirmed the deal with the UK-Brazilian investment group Sports Alpha Capital.
Chairman Kelvin Thomas said the club had kept its promise to update supporters as the process moved forward. "As we always said, we will keep supporters updated as we progress and we are pleased that we have finalised agreements and now move to closing," Thomas stated.
Joao Xavier, a founding partner at Sports Alpha Capital, also commented on the milestone. "We are very happy to have reached formal agreements," Xavier said. "Obviously obtaining IFR and EFL approvals was a big step, but this is also a very important milestone."
The consortium, which also includes London-based investment firm Gemcorp Capital, expects to complete the transaction next week. The group previously withdrew from a proposed deal with Colchester United. Pato, who retired from professional football three years ago after a career that included spells at AC Milan, Chelsea, and the Brazilian national team, was part of a delegation that attended Northampton's recent home game against Newport County.
This development arrives as Northampton seek to improve their on-field fortunes. Their recent form reads LLWDD from the last five matches, including a 1-0 home defeat to Rotherham last time out. The immediate focus turns to this weekend's fixture away to Port Vale, a match between the 22nd and 23rd placed teams in the division.
