Edu Gaspar, the former Arsenal technical director, was at Sixfields for Northampton Town's recent League Two fixture as the club's prospective takeover moves closer. The 48-year-old Brazilian is understood to be working in an advisory role for Sports Alpha Capital, the group expected to finalise its acquisition of the club this week.
Gaspar watched from the is Northampton fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Rotherham United on 19 September. The result left the Cobblers 22nd in the table with six points from seven games.
He is a former midfielder who won the Premier League with Arsenal's 'Invincibles' in 2004 and earned 16 caps for Brazil. After retiring, he served as Arsenal's technical director, a role in which he is credited with playing a key part in the appointment of Mikel Arteta as manager. He moved to become Nottingham Forest's Global Head of Football in 2025.
Gaspar was recently appointed to the board of Bulgarian side Levski Sofia, a club owned by Atanas Bostandjiev. Bostandjiev is one of three individuals approved by the Independent Football Regulator as suitable to own Northampton Town. Levski Sofia currently lead the Bulgarian top flight and will compete in the Europa League this season.
Speaking about his new role in Bulgaria, Gaspar said, "I am very excited to be part of this project." He also reflected on his career, stating, "Throughout my life I have been used to making good decisions."
The presence of such a high-profile football figure at Sixfields shows the significant changes on the horizon for Northampton Town.
