A consortium led by former Brazil international Alexandre Pato has completed the acquisition of a 70% stake in Northampton Town. The investment vehicle Sports Alpha Capital confirmed the purchase of the majority shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited on Wednesday.
The new co-chairmen, Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain, said the takeover was done on a debt-free basis. "We can confirm Sports Alpha Capital have completed the acquisition of a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited," they stated. They added they are proud to become custodians and recognised the strong foundations, including a solid relationship with supporters, that were handed over.
The new ownership arrives at a critical time for Northampton Town. Relegated from League One last season after finishing bottom, the club has struggled at the start of the current campaign. They sit 22nd in League Two with just six points from seven games, having won only once. Their recent form shows two losses, two draws, and a single win in the last five outings. The new co-chairmen said their responsibility is to protect these foundations while bringing investment, expertise, and ambition to the club, with plans that must go hand in hand with sustainability.
Alexandre Pato, who is set to join the club's board as a director, brings a high-profile football background to the project. The former striker earned 27 caps for Brazil, scoring ten goals, and had notable spells at AC Milan, Corinthians, and Villarreal. He also had a brief loan at Chelsea in 2016, making two Premier League appearances. Pato last played for Sao Paulo before retiring in 2024. His involvement is seen as a significant boost to the club's profile.
The immediate focus for the team remains on the pitch, with a tough away fixture against sixth-placed York coming up on 10 October. The new owners have taken control of a club that, while facing a tough league position, now operates without debt and with a clear mandate for prudent growth.
