Northampton Town are on the verge of a majority stake takeover by a consortium that includes former Brazil, AC Milan and Chelsea striker Alexandre Pato, BBC Sport understands.
What is the latest on the Northampton Town deal?
Sports Alpha Capital, the group linked with the bid, had previously explored buying Colchester United earlier this year but withdrew after initial discussions. Pato, 36, is involved but not leading the consortium, which follows chairman Kelvin Thomas’s confirmation last month that a 'well-funded' investment was 'pretty much agreed'. The Cobblers finished 24th in League One last season with 35 points from 46 games, scoring 39 goals and conceding 74.
Why does this matter for the Cobblers?
The proposed investment aims to clear Northampton Town’s debts, with the club reporting a pre-tax loss of nearly £3m in April. Relegation to League Two has increased the urgency for financial stability, and the new ownership could provide the resources needed to rebuild after a difficult campaign that saw them finish 68 points behind leaders Lincoln.
What comes next for Northampton Town?
Manager Chris Hogg, appointed in May, has already brought in seven new signings, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City and midfielder Connor Lemonheigh-Evans from MK Dons. The takeover, if completed, would allow the club to strengthen further ahead of the new season, with the consortium’s backing potentially accelerating their recovery in League Two.
