Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway is navigating a complex situation with his squad, which is currently dealing with a series of injuries and fitness issues. This has been compounded by the team's first League Two match of the season, where eight players were missing due to injuries, and multiple fitness concerns further limited the available playing time for some key players.
During pre-season, several players, including Ollie Clarke, Ryan Tafazolli, and Ollie Palmer, faced injuries that restricted their playing time. Clarke, for instance, missed several pre-season friendlies due to a calf issue, playing more than 45 minutes just once. Tafazolli and Palmer also struggled with limited appearances, with Tafazolli making only three substitute appearances of 30 minutes or less, and Palmer playing over 45 minutes only once against Leyton Orient.
The arrival of Joseph Hungbo, who was left out of Wigan Athletic's pre-season matches before joining Swindon, has added another layer of complexity. Holloway highlighted the risks of rushing players back into action, citing the example of Sam Inwood, who suffered a hamstring tear after playing a full 90 minutes on loan from Bolton Wanderers.
Holloway acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, 'I think that it is going to have to be for a couple of weeks, as some of them have missed severe chunks of pre-season. I didn’t expect all of them would be injured. I didn’t expect Hungbo to come here when he wasn’t wanted, and he hasn’t done any minutes, so we can now look at him for 60, so I might be able to start him [against Cheltenham].' He emphasized the importance of managing the players carefully, stating, 'I can’t start him, play him for 45 minutes and bring him off at half time if he is slaughtering people. It is a weird situation, but we will get there, and the practice that you do with people during the week, you have got to continue with that.'
Swindon Town is hopeful that Joe Snowdon and Paul Glatzel will be back in contention for the upcoming match against Cheltenham Town. Both players have been dealing with hamstring issues, with Glatzel's absence being a surprise due to a previous injury that kept him out of the second half of the previous season. Despite their return, both players will need to be eased back into the season after multiple weeks without playing.
The ongoing challenges highlight the difficulties faced by Swindon Town as they look to get their season off to a solid start, with Holloway and his team working hard to manage the situation and bring their players back to full fitness.
