Northampton Town were held to a 1-1 draw by Crawley Town at Sixfields on Tuesday, a result that leaves them 19th in the League Two standings. Nathan Okopu gave the Cobblers a first-half lead, but Dion Pereira's second-half equaliser earned a point for the visitors after Lee Evans was sent off.
Osman Kamara was a constant threat down the right flank for the home side. His work helped create pressure that led to the opening goal in the 38th minute. A cross from Lee Evans was flicked on by Joe O’Brien Whitmarsh, and Nathan Okopu was in the right place to finish from close range. Kamara almost doubled the advantage shortly after, forcing a save from Crawley goalkeeper Jeacock.
Northampton had other chances earlier in the match. Aderoju missed a good opportunity from a Louie Watson cross in the 17th minute. Crawley, who made two changes to their starting lineup, also had moments. New signing Dylan Morgan, who joined from Torquay last week, curled a shot wide of the post.
The game's major turning point came when Lee Evans fouled Dylan Morgan. Referee Alan Dale showed Evans a straight red card, reducing Northampton to ten men for the final half-hour. Crawley manager Colin Kazim-Richards responded by bringing on Dion Pereira and Danilo Orsi. The changes had an immediate impact.
Pereira, making his first appearance since preseason, levelled the score in the 67th minute. His initial shot was saved by Jeacock, but Kamara recycled the ball with a cross that Pereira converted. Crawley then pushed for a winner. Klaudio Krasniqi hit the post from distance, and Pereira forced another save. Jeacock also did well to stop a close-range effort from Louie Watson late on. A potential late winner for Crawley was ruled out when Orsi was flagged offside.
The single point means Northampton Town's record now reads zero wins, two draws, and one loss from their first three league games. They have scored just one goal and conceded two, leaving them with a -1 goal difference. They currently sit five points behind early leaders Barnet in the title race. Fans can track the evolving standings as the season progresses.
Attention now turns to a quick turnaround and the next fixture. Northampton Town will be at home again this Saturday, September 5th, to face Newport County. Newport are positioned 11th in the table, providing another tough test for Jon Brady's side as they search for a first win of the campaign. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page.
